« Lithograph » became popular at the beginning of the XX centuries. The artist draws onto stone using a special lithographic crayon or greasy ink. The stone is then treated with a chemical solution that ensures the image will attract printing ink, and that blank areas repel ink and attract water. A solvent « fixes » the images, and the surface is dampened with water. Oil-based ink is then applied to the stone with a roller adhering only the image. Finally, the stone is placed on a lithographic press and covered with damp paper and board. The Image is printed in reverse and if the final image has multiple colors, it may be necessary to make separate stones or plates for each. The production numbers are limited and after the edition the stone or the plate are broken or scratched, in order to not reproduced the lithograph.
« Lithograph by » means that the artist for example Dali, drew on the original plate or on the original transfer paper.
« Lithograph after » means that a professional printmaker (famous french master-printer Fernand Mourlot or Charles Sorlier) created the original lithographic plate based on the artist’s work. For example, the after lithographs reproduced some of the artist large color paintings from earlier in their careers–created before they had begun to utilize color printmaking techniques.
In other cases, the « after » lithographs were crated by well-known artists. For example « Maternité after Picasso » was an original painting but Mourlot created the original plates for the lithography.
The « after works » were always approved and authorized by the artists.
